How we do it

Scope Fluidics is a hub for technology start-ups. We focus on global challenges in health to develop diagnostic and med tech solutions. We accelerate ideas into products by providing a legal, financial and infrastructural framework, as well as critical know-how resources for projects that can grow into start-ups. We organically develop the projects through all of the stages leading to registration and certification for market access. Once the systems attain marketing authorization, we seek strategic partnership with global med tech suppliers to exploit the global potential of the products.

Our organization as a whole offers a lively, stimulating environment in which we respond to the social needs and market requirements with efficient solutions – all that thanks to a team of doctors and medical personnel, project managers, engineers and academics, who cooperate in order to deliver groundbreaking medical products.

Our background

Scope Fluidics was founded in 2010 at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences with a view to developing microfluidic solutions for medicine. We work in close collaboration with academia – the clinical and industrial perspectives help us focus on solutions that can be efficiently produced and that target specific and important healthcare needs.

We combine the academic impetus to create and innovate with expert engineering and performance-driven discipline. We are highly effective and quick to create solutions and to prototype electronic, optical and mechanical devices and microfluidic systems. In our facilities, we use both precision machining and injection molding. With our know-how and a strong network of contacts, we also support smooth transition of innovative diagnostic systems into production.

We have broad experience in building portfolios of intellectual property rights, which includes drafting patent applications for inventions developed with Scope Fluidics, carrying out the proceedings before patent offices in cooperation with patent attorneys, identification of innovative solutions and assessment of their patentability through prior art and FTO searches.

The fastest point-of-care PCR

Scope Fluidics founded Curiosity Diagnostics to create the PCR|ONE system that delivers the fastest bacterial and viral pathogen detection in the world.
This fully automated procedure identifies up to 20 distinct pathogens and drug-resistant genes.

Most comprehensive AST

The emergence and rapid spread of drug resistance among bacteria constitutes a major threat to public health worldwide. In the absence of new antibiotics, better diagnostics is the only solution. We are now developing an automated culturing system delivering the most comprehensive information on bacterial susceptibility to all known antibiotics and on the resistance mechanisms.

Point-of-care biochemistry

Between 2011 and 2014 we developed a prototype of a vitro diagnostic system performing multiple biochemistry assays from a single droplet of finger prick blood.
The system comprises Scope’s proprietary, disposable microfluidic devices: for the collection of micro-samples of blood and a cartridge with multiple reagents for the assay panel. In order to validate the system, we constructed a pilot production line for manufacturing of disposable cartridges.
The system assays several parameters in less than twenty minutes from sample collection and is now being introduced to production by our Client.

    President of the Board

    In 2002 he obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Between 2002 and 2005 postdoctoral fellowship with prof. George Whitesides at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard University. Full professor since 2014, coauthor of over a hundred scientific publications, and over a hundred patent applications.

    Chemist, specialist in the physical chemistry of materials and in photo-physics. 15 years of hands-on experience in the management of research and development teams in pharmaceutical and technological companies. 10 years of experience in the management of R&D projects; has managed the development of a number of marketed pharmaceutical products.

    Szymon Ruta

    Member of the Board

    Graduate of MBA studies at the University of Warsaw. Executive with over 15 years of experience in mergers, acquisitions, investment and restructuring projects. He held the position of a board member – finance director and a supervisory board member of numerous companies, including companies listed at Warsaw Stock Exchange. As a managing director in an investment fund he was responsible for companies with total value of 125 million EUR.

      Paweł Michalak

      MSc Engineer in Electronic and Electrotechnical Engineering. Employed in Scope Fluidics Group since 2011. He is responsible for designing and programming of microprocessor controllers and mechatronic systems, which is also his great passion, along with enduro.

      Piotr Knap

      MSc Engineer in Polymer Processing; Piotr specializes in constructing prototypes of devices, injection molds, developing machining technology. He is an operator of cutting machines (CNC and conventional) and injection molding machines. In Scope Group since 2011, he is Senior Design Engineer and head of the Workshop Department. After hours, Piotr is also a welder, electrician, builder, mechanic and an avid motorcyclist.

      Anna Siemianowska

      MSc in Chemistry, University of Warsaw, and BA in Economics specializing in Human Resources Management. She has been employed in Scope Fluidics Group since 2011 as HR and Administraion Coordinator. Anna's scope of responsibility includes coordination of orders, document workflow, supervision over health and safety matters. She facilitates the work of other team members by caring for good communication and pleasant atmosphere of cooperation. Apart from work, she likes good movies and is very keen on interior design and trends in this field.

      Seweryn Bajer-Borstyn

      PhD in Biological Science, specialist in molecular biology and protein biochemistry. In Scope Fluidics Group since 2012, he initially dealt with lyophilization of reagents for the PCRONE project. Currently, Seweryn is Product Manager and he co-ordinates work on the microfluidic chip in the Bacteromic project. He is a fervent fan of science fiction and self-taught leather artisan.

      Paweł Dębski

      PhD in Chemical Science, graduate of International Doctoral Studies at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In Scope Fluidics Group since 2012. Paweł specializes in the application of statistical and data science methods to analyze the results and optimize the procedures of biological experiments. He spends his free time playing squash or dancing to Cuban music, and when he gets tired he repairs and collects watches.

      PhD in Biotechnology, specialized in polymerase chain reaction and molecular research. In Scope Fluidics Group since 2012, he is the head of the PCR ONE project; co-author of 11 scientific publications (total impact factor 52). Kamil abandoned his early acting career for science :)

      MSc Engineer, specialized in automation and robotics. In Scope Fluidics Group since 2012, he works on project-related electronics and microfluidic chip. Daniel is passionate about motoring and electronics.

      Katarzyna Kupidura-Pawlik

      MSc Engineer in Industrial Biotechnology, graduate of Chemical and Process Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology. As part of the individual study programme, she also studied molecular microbiology at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw. She has conducted research in the field of molecular biology of microorganisms for 5 years. In Scope Fluidics Group since 2013, Katarzyna has been responsible for patent protection and exploring formal possibilities of introducing technological innovations to the market. She loves to admire wild nature from a kayak, bicycle or mountain trail.

      Production Design and Management Engineer. He has been employed in Scope Fluidics Group since 2015. Paweł actively supports our projects by preparing machining technology for CNC machine tools with the use of HSM and HFM techniques.

      MSc Engineer, graduate of the Faculty of Production Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology. In Scope Fluidics Group since January 2016, Aleksandra is our Research and Development Specialist, responsible for optimizing the production process of microfluidic chips. After hours, a fitness and dance instructor. Her biggest dream is to open her own dance school.

      Biotechnologist. Since 2016, she combines work in the Scope Fluidics Group with studies at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Warsaw University of Technology. In the PCRONE project she deals with biochemistry and the process of lyophilization of reagents. In her spare time, she changes a lab coat into a bicycle or a book.

      Biotechnologist. She has been working at Scope Fluidics Group since June 2017. In the PCR ONE project she works in the Biochemistry Team as Junior Biochemistry Specialist in the Research and Development Department, where she is responsible for biochemical analysis, including DNA isolation, and work on modern diagnostic equipment developed under the project.

      Biotechnologist. She is Biochemistry Specialist in the Research and Development Department of Scope Fuidics Group since July 2017. In the PCR ONE project she is responsible for running the Clean Room, takes care of ultra-cleanliness and the quality of work in our labs. After hours, Anna replaces the pipette with a PS4 pad and puts on headphones with some good music, but her favorite way to relax is exotic travel.

      Biotechnologist and laboratory diagnostician, who is also passionate about cosmetics chemistry. In Scope Fluidics Group since August 2017, as Microbiologist. In addition to growing microorganisms, she splits her time between our Clean Room and biochemical lab. She wants to spend her retirement travelling the world:)

      Paulina Bogusławska

      Engineer of Bioinformatics by education, in the Bacteromic project since September 2017 as Intern Programmer. Her main task is to optimize the process of image analysis and analysis of data derived from it. She also provides support to other team memers in all kinds of design-related issues. Paulina is passionate about motorization and DIY. Recently, she got keen on cooking and still raises the level of difficulty of her dishes.

      Monika Strempel

      Monika is a PhD researcher, who has been working as Microbiologist in the Bacteromic project since November 2017. Her doctoral dissertation was focused on research of the biofilm of coagulase-negative staphylococci. Her responsibilities include growing bacteria as well as designing and performing drug resistance tests. In her free time, she plays Heroes III or paints 1/35 scale models of military vehicles.

      MA in Economics with a major in International Economics and over 10 years of experience in business consulting and implementation of international projects. She has been working as Finance Specialist in Scope Fluidics Group since 2018. Anna loves Italian culture and all kinds of travel.

      Mechanical Engineer, graduate of the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology, and MA in Specialized Translation of the University of Warsaw. Employed in Scope Fluidics Group since 2018 as Design Engineer. Paweł has nearly 8 years of experience, among others in mechanical engineering, 3D modeling and servicing of machines and devices. His main interests include: general mechanics, martial arts, C++ programming, photography, foreign languages.

      MSc in Biotechnology, PhD in Veterinary Science. In Scope Fluidics Group since 2018, she has been hired as Biochemistry Specialist. Katarzyna is a Clean Room employee, but also supports the biochemistry team and participates in the optimization of the microfluidic chip production process. At home, she is a mother, who in her free time enjoys good books and meeting friends.

      MSc in Computer Science, specialized in Microsoft.NET system software. He has over 10 years of experience as IT architect of sales systems for an international IT distributor. In Scope Fluidics Group since 2018, Bartosz supports programming work related to the Bacteromic and PCRONE analyzers. He spends his free time constructing a car simulator.

      MSc in Biology with 7 years of experience in scientific research. Specialist in the field of chromatin structure and remodeling. He professionally dealt with new generation sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Co-author of 4 publications in reputable scientific periodicals. Privately: husband, father, enthusiast of broadly understood natural and social sciences.

      Chief engineer in the Scope Fluidics group. Master of science from the Lublin University of Technology and post-graduate University of Ecology and Management in Warsaw. He has nearly 20 years of engineering experience (including half of his career in Scandinavian countries), working mainly in the automotive industry, precision mechanisms industry, medical equipment and others.
